Vol 1, Num 5 (Aug - Oct, 1996) ----------------Page 7 ----------------ANG TANJAYANON NEWSLETTER

(continued from back cover)

From Stanford University comes this letter from Ms. Carmeña Luz Y. Miraflor: "I have not read a more hilarious but down to-earth, from the heart newsletter than that the one Tanjay Association puts out. You guys who thought of speaking in the distinct Tanjay patois (I mean that as a compliment) deserve all the credit. One thing with Tanjayanons - they're at their best. . . always..', (Editors note: Carmeña Luz comes from a big family of professionals: judges, college professors, architects, chemists, nurses, first-rate musicians, etc. Their father, the late Mr. Nemesio Valencia Miraflor, a genuine Tanjayanon, was among the most loved and most respected pioneering educators of the then sub-province of Siquijor. It is in memory of this humble Tanjayanon that an educational foundation bearing his name has been gratefully established to benefit the youth of Lazi and its neighboring communities in Siquijor, subsidized by donors, some of them anonymous, here in America. Tio Nene, the favorite among his peers, was also the brother of my mother.

Here's a letter we find intriguing, almost "naughty":

...I also got hold of your Souvenir Program. It was grreat. I enjoyed reading it and going over every page -- even the ads, which I normally don't care about. But yours was different. The ads were funny. One said "Greetings from New York" the other 'from Michigan" still another 'from Connecticut', then all of a sudden "From Ilaud" and this is a doctor in Rhode Island. It was so funny. Just like the Tanjayanon Newsletter, it will be a collector's item. One criticism though: your pictures are so small and not clear. Specially that of the "Tanjay's version of the UP Oblation." Can't you make a blow-up of that beauuful picture? Please do. That would make my day! (Hee, hee, hee). And the model - is he really for hire? How much? How old is he? 20? 30? From where is he? Is he single? (Ha, ha, ha). Only a Tanjayanon would pose like that. What is his address? (Ha, ha, ha). Of course, you won't publish this. My husband will kill me! Bitaw, Brad, if you publish this, which I think you will (if I know you!), it's ok, but please, please, don't put my name...."

Dear Liberated Woman: We have decided to accede to your request. Somewhere in the hallowed pages of this trash, we are reprinting the Tanjay's Version of the UP Oblation -- Pablito Manapol in all his glory. Art for Art's Sake!!

On the e-mail, came this message from Salem, Virginia: Hello, I'm the son Arturo and Goli Cornelio Ybañez. I was born in Mission Hospital in Dumaguete. All of my first 11 months in life was in Ilaud Rizal St., Tanjay. My Mom just wanted me to tell you that she got the Newsletter and enjoyed reading it over and over. Amused and wished that she could come for the celebration. Maybe next year. By the way, my Mom says that the picture is Aida Samson and that the membership fee is in the 'mail.,

Regards to all of the Tanjayanons,

Sheldon C. Ybañez

Mrs. Ciony Zosa Anderson, who teaches at the Queen of Angels Academy Catholic School at Compton, advised us that there were some books being disposed from their library, and that she could arrange that they be donated to the Tanjay book drive. So we went over and got whole balikbayan box load of books which we will ship to Tanjay. Thank you Ciony, for the bookz...
