Vol 1, Num 5 (Aug -Oct, 1996) ----------Page 6 ---------ANG TANJAYANON NEWSLETTER

MISCELANY...

On the way back from Manila, Danny had a stopover in Hong Kong and got to talk to a lady who turned out to be Braddock's cousin, Thelma Valencia. She was coming back from a vacation in Dumaguete. She said she heard about the July Fiesta Celebration in LA but was unable to attend, but surely won1t miss it next time. We promised to send her copies of the latest Tanjay Newsletter, and back issues. (Cousin Thelma Valenciano, a former campus beauty in her younger days, married a Valencia, a brother of Dr. Nido Valencia, who married Dr. Teresita "Baby" Pin iii, the daughter of the late Judge Acias Pinili whose wife was the former Tia Batic Borromeo, sister of Tio Edion Borromeo whose wife is Tia Freding Banogon who is a cousin of Tia Feling Banogon Seneris, the mother of Badingding, who, finally, is the wife of Danny, who met Thelma in Hong Kong. Small world, isn't it?)

One day Ramon (anak ni Badingding ug ni Danny) was musing about the theory of "The Six Levels of Connection" which states that anybody in the world can be connected to anybody else because they know someone who, in turn, knows another person, who knows that person in question, and so forth. So for example, he is connected to John Kennedy because be knows Perla Manapol, who in turn, has played squash with some of the Kennedy children. So on the third level, he is connected to Kennedy. Likewise, he is connected to the Pope by four levels because his grand-uncle Msgr. Raval, a bishop, knows Cardinal Sin, who in turn, has met the Pope. It is interesting to trace such connections. For instance most Tanjayanons are 3 levels away ftom the Queen of England. (Yes, really! . . .and Princess Di can trace her connections to Tanjay?!) Guess how, and write in your answers. We'll explain in the next issue.

Along the same argument, some unknown person in Africa would be about 3 or 4 levels away from a president or international figure, who in turn would be connected to us by the same number of levels, hence the six level average connection to anybody in the world. So the overused term "small world" - when we meet somebody who knows another person you know - isn't really that surprising.
