People’s Forum
MALAYA
Sir:

Mr. Justino Dimasalang of Tondo bewails Mrs. Corazon Aquino’s call for a boycott of some crony firms (People’s Forum, Feb. 24). As an employee of such a firm, Mr. Dimasalang understandably fears for his job and for the welfare of his family.

But Mr. Dimasalang is unreasonable when he demands that Cory must feed him and his family if the company goes bankrupt. Instead he should make this demand on his employers who not only made their money on the basis of their connections with the powers-that-be but also coerced their employees to campaign for the Marcos-Tolentino ticket.

Also, Mr. Dimasalang must realize that it is the people, not Cory, who are punishing the crony firms. Our people are not stupid. They would not obey Mrs. Aquino’s call for a boycott if it were directed against a firm that made its profits honorably or did not try to subvert the people’s electoral will.

I am certain that if Mrs. Aquino had called for a boycott of a decent firm (for example, proctor & Gamble or Colgate-Palmolive), the people’s reaction would be quite different from their enthusiastic boycott of the products of Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco’s San Miguel Corporation.

Mr. Dimasalang should point out to his employers that he was faithful to them (even to the point of writing letters-to-the-editor criticizing Mrs. Aquino) and remind them that such loyalty above and beyond the call of duty should be rewarded: if the company folds up, they should feed him and his family.

If Mr. Dimasalang’s employers are anything like Mr. Cojuangco, I am sure they will accede to his humble petition.
