MALAYA

The choice of Benguet State University Prof. Bienvenido Balweg as part of the team that will negotiate with Rev. Conrado Balweg (MALAYA, Mar. 27) may not be as wise as it looks.

The brothers are not very close politically, Bienvenido having turned KBL. They may not even be that close psychologically since Bienvenido is about ten years older.

The ten-year age gap also suggests the philosophical and theological distance: Conrado is a product of post-Vatican II philosophical and theological thinking. Bienvenido’s training in philosophy was rooted in the Council of Trent over 300 years ago.

While I hope that blood will be thicker than philosophy, I would have expected that someone with a more congenial philosophical bent (like the Rev. Edicio de la Torre) should also have been named to the panel.
