We, the People

Since the Board of Regents of the University of the Philippines is at best a debating society and at worst, a rubberstamp, being named a regent doesn’t really mean much.

Still, certain minimum standards of membership have to be met (even if only for the sake of appearances) and on this basis, I protest the nomination of Loretta Ann Rosales to this body (The Times, Apr. 2)

Board membership implies a willingness to engage in reasoned debate, to negotiate in good faith, and to compromise. Hence, there is no room for people like Ms. Rosales, to whom the clenched fist, upraised arm, and exposed armpit are a substitute for thought.
