Mr. Oscar Miranda oversimplifies (Scenario 1, May 19) when he says the star system in Philippine movies died when the stars successfully set up their own companies.

His analysis is flawed by one blind spot, the impact of television, particularly its star-making function.

He fails to take into account the proliferation of the movie/entertainment magazines (and similar sections in the newspapers) as well as the corresponding vast increase in people like himself -- reporters, hucksters, gossips, payola-handlers, and alalays -- servicing these media.

Nor does he seem to appreciate the role of the bomba movies of the 60’s and afterwards in unveiling a new set of stars to a public far less innocent than the public Dona Sisang catered to.
