Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi has suggested half-seriously that former President Marcos buy Gilligan’s Island and live there (PDI, Mar. 3). This is not a bad idea at all.

If Mr. Marcos bought an estate within driving distance of Honolulu, his family would enjoy no privacy at all. Since Mr. and Mrs. Marcos have become such international celebrities, their estate will certainly be placed on the routes taken by many of the standard package tours of Honolulu and its environs.

Moreover, the thousands of Filipinos passing through Hawaii will anticipate that all their friends and relatives will ask whether they saw the Marcos property, if not Mr. Marcos himself. And so, each of them will feel duty-bound to pass by that property, hoping to catch a glimpse of the president.

For his own privacy and peace of mind, Mr. Marcos should not live on the main island of Oahu.
