Business Day

When "people power" took control over Channel 4, one-time broadcasters Bong Lapira, Eddie Ilarde, and Francisco "Soc" Rodrigo looked back on the old ABS-CBN and looked forward to the return of the Lopez family which owned it.

I do not question the Lopez family’s ownership of the physical plant, but I vehemently protest the assumption made by people like Mr. Ilarde that ownership of the physical plant automatically confers on the Lopez family the right to all the channels allocations which had been granted to the old ABS-CBN.

Our people did not face tanks merely to restore to the Lopex family the vast informational power they enjoyed through ABS-CBN (and at times, misused).

We have seen how the mass media can be a force for good as well as for evil. This experience, along with the vast changes in technology over the past 20 years, suggest that the new government should undertake a massive revamp of the way we allocate radio and television channels.
