Mr. Luis D. Beltran
PERSONAL
Editor/Columnist
Dear Mr. Beltran:

I regret that once again I must write you to point out another error, this time in yesterday’s (Feb. 14) editorial cartoon which pictures Ronald Reagan as the Lone Ranger and President Marcos as Tonto.

The error lies in the title of the cartoon -- "The Lone Ranger and his faithful scout." As any Lone Ranger fan knows, Tonto was no scout: rather, Scout was Tonto’s horse!

Unless, of course, the error was made on purpose. Could it be that your cartoonist (or whoever instructed him) wanted to portray president Marcos as a tonto and to call him a horse at the same time?

Best regards.

Ed:  in the vernacular, as in Spanish, "tonto" means dumb, both as an adjective and a noun. Which brings up the interesting subject of the comic strip:  why the faithful scout always answered the Lone Ranger with the phrase "kemo sabe", which could be taken as a corruption of the phrase "quein, no sabe" or "he, who doesn't know".  Was the partnership that friendly after all?
